At 37mm it is one of very few modern watches that suits a slim wrist without looking undersized. The honest alternative within the same family. If the recipient is the kind of person who will not remember to take a watch off, the modern 5 Sports is the better buy: 100 meters of water resistance against the SNK809's low rating, on a similar automatic movement. It costs more and wears considerably larger, so it is a trade rather than a straight upgrade — but for a careless wearer it is the right one.

Who this is a good gift for
Someone who has expressed curiosity about mechanical watches without owning one. Someone with a slim wrist, because 37mm is hard to find. It is also a good second watch for a person who already has something tough and waterproof. The SNK809 does not need to cover every situation if it is not the only watch in the drawer, and its limitations stop mattering entirely in that role.
Who should not be given this watch
Anyone careless with things around water. The water resistance is genuinely low, and a watch that gets worn in a shower a few times will eventually suffer for it. Anyone who wears a watch once a week rather than daily, because an automatic they pick up will be stopped every single time and need resetting. And anyone who wants a watch that is simply always right — that person wants quartz.
Also not the right watch for a large wrist if it is meant to be the main watch. At 37mm it reads as small on a broad wrist, which some people like and others do not. Check before buying if you can.
Living with it: the honest account
Worn daily, it runs continuously and needs nothing. Left off for a weekend, it will be stopped by Sunday, and restarting it means winding the crown and resetting both the time and the day-date — which takes a minute and is the part people find tedious rather than charming. Expect a few seconds of drift a day, gaining or losing, which is normal for a movement at this price and is not a fault.
The stock canvas strap is comfortable but cheap-feeling, and it is the single upgrade that changes the watch most. A leather strap dresses it up considerably; a nylon one makes it look deliberate for a few dollars. Either is a better use of twenty dollars than anything else you could spend it on here.
Alternatives worth considering
If water resistance matters, the modern Seiko 5 Sports at 100 meters. If a dress watch is closer to what you want, the Orient Bambino is better looking and similarly priced. If the recipient is not actually interested in mechanical watches, a Timex Weekender costs far less and will be worn more, and the Casio Duro gives you 200 meters of water resistance for a fraction of the money.

Can you swim with the SNK809?
No. The water resistance is low — rain and hand-washing only. If the recipient will not remember to take a watch off, buy the Seiko 5 Sports at 100 meters or a Casio Duro at 200 instead.
