Editorial Policy

Independence

No brand pays for placement on this site, ever. No advertiser sees a page before it is published. No product is included because a manufacturer asked, and none is excluded because a manufacturer objected. There is no sponsored content here, and if that ever changes it will be labeled in a way nobody could miss.

The site earns affiliate commission, which is disclosed on every page and in full on the affiliate disclosure page. Commission does not influence which products are selected or what order they appear in. When the better option for the reader pays us less, the reader wins — that is the whole basis on which this site is worth reading.

What we claim, and what we do not

We do not test products. We have not worn, handled or owned the items recommended here, and no page will imply otherwise. Specifications come from the manufacturer or the retailer’s current listing; anything that cannot be verified is left out rather than approximated.

We publish no star ratings, scores or review counts, because we have not earned any. We do not reproduce another platform’s ratings as though they were ours. And we publish no testimonials, because this site has no customer reviews to show — a clean page beats an invented quote.

Where a claim about a product is an observation about what buyers consistently report, it is phrased that way rather than as our own measurement. Where a statistic appears, it is sourced and linked. The full method is on the how we choose page.

Update cadence

• Quarterly: every roundup is reviewed. Is each pick still sold, still inside its tier, still the right recommendation?
• By 1 October annually: every seasonal page — the Christmas lists, Father’s Day, graduation — is reviewed before the season it serves, so nothing enters its busiest weeks with a discontinued pick on it.
• On report: any page a reader flags is checked promptly, ahead of the scheduled cycle.

Every page carries a visible “last updated” date near the top. That date reflects a genuine review of the content, not a routine redeployment of the site.

Corrections

Report an error to contact@bowandbudget.com or through the contact form. What happens next:

1. Factual errors are corrected as soon as they are verified.
2. A material correction — one that changes a recommendation, or corrects a specification a buyer would have relied on — is noted on the page itself rather than quietly edited.
3. Typographical fixes and clarity edits are made without a note, because nobody needs a changelog of comma repairs.

What gets a product removed from a list

• It is discontinued or unavailable. A dead link is the worst outcome on a gift page, especially in December.
• Its price has moved out of the page’s tier. A ceiling is a hard boundary. If a product drifts above it, it moves to the higher tier’s page or comes off entirely.
• Quality has declined. Where buyers consistently begin reporting a problem that was not there before — a revised model with a worse component, for instance — the pick is removed and replaced.
• It no longer suits the page’s recipient. A better answer for the same buyer displaces a weaker one. Lists are not archives.

Use of AI

Research, drafting and editing tools may be used in producing pages on this site. What does not change is accountability: every page is selected and signed off by Michael W., every product is verified as currently sold, and no specification, price, rating or first-hand claim is ever generated rather than checked. Where a fact could not be verified, it does not appear.

Reader reports

Reports of discontinued products, wrong specifications and bad recommendations are the most useful mail this site gets. They are read, acted on, and reflected in the updated date on the page. If something we recommended let you down, we would rather know.
