The Weekender is the watch we recommend most often for a first watch, and the reason is not that it is the best watch at the price. It is that it is the most forgiving. If you misread the recipient's taste — which, buying for someone else, you might — the entire character of the watch changes for the price of a coffee.
That reversibility is worth more in a gift than a better specification would be. Add a 38mm case that fits nearly every adult wrist and a backlight that genuinely works, and you have the lowest-risk watch gift there is.

The slip-through strap comes off in about five seconds with no tools, so one watch becomes as many looks as you buy straps for — and it means a misjudged strap color costs almost nothing to fix. A nylon strap in a color the recipient would not have chosen themselves costs almost nothing, and it demonstrates that you understood what you were giving them rather than just buying a watch. It costs more and loses the quick-change fabric strap, which is a real trade if experimenting with looks was part of the appeal.

Why the strap system matters more than it sounds
A slip-through strap has no spring bars to remove and no tools involved: the strap simply passes under the case and out the other side. That means a change takes seconds and cannot scratch anything, which is the difference between a strap collection someone actually uses and one that stays in a drawer because changing it is a fiddly ten-minute job.
For a gift, this also de-risks the decision. You do not have to get the strap right. Buy the watch, buy one strap you think they will like, and if you are wrong they can have any other look for a few dollars. Almost nothing else in this category gives you that.
Who should not be given one
Anyone who will swim in it or forget to take it off — the water resistance is genuinely limited, and a Casio Duro solves that for similar money. Anyone who needs a formal watch, because a fabric strap is never formal and the case is a field watch. And anyone particularly sensitive to small noises at night, because the tick is audible in a silent bedroom.
It is also not the right watch for someone who already owns several. The Weekender is a brilliant first or second watch and an unremarkable fifth one.
Living with it
Very little to manage. A battery every few years, and the fabric strap will eventually fray — at which point it is replaced for the price of a sandwich rather than repaired. The Indiglo button is on the crown, which takes a day to get used to and then becomes automatic.
One small habit worth passing on: take it off before a shower. It is not that a splash will destroy it, but repeated soakings over years will find their way in, and this is not a watch built to shrug that off.
Alternatives
If water resistance matters, the Casio Duro at 200 meters or the Timex Expedition Scout at 50. If the recipient wants something mechanical, the Seiko SNK809 is similarly sized and has a window in the back. If the watch needs to survive genuine abuse, the square G-Shock. If a dress watch is closer to the brief, the Orient Bambino or the Seiko Essentials line.

Can you swim with a Timex Weekender?
No. It is rated for rain and hand-washing, not swimming. If the recipient will not remember to take a watch off, buy a Casio Duro at 200 meters or a Timex Expedition Scout at 50 instead.
Is 38mm the right size?
It is the safest guess for an adult wrist you cannot measure, and it suits the majority of men and many women. Slimmer wrists may prefer 36mm or smaller; broad wrists may want 40mm or more.
